Is there a loosely coupled way to import a contact list from CSV or Excel?

Hi I am trying to create a tool that allows my users to import contact lists into the tool.

I'd like the tool not to assume the arrangements of the columns in the CSV or Excel spreadsheet.

Any ideas?
